"Ladies and gentlemen," the auctioneer's voice rang out, "Our final item this evening is a tiny pair of white jade earrings from Shang Xi, called, The One I Treasure." The hall was immediately filled with a murmur of grasp and commotion through the crowd at that introduction.
The earrings were brought out on a turquoise velvet cushion presented on a gold platter, their delicate and exquisite design catching the light and making them sparkle.
"Oh my God! I could tell this must be from a hot romantic guy!" exclaimed Joyce. Her father Robert immediately glared at this nosy but kind daughter of his with a stern look, signaling her to keep her manner.
"What else do you know besides hot guys all day long?" reprimanded Robert, though stern, but his voice full of endearment from a father. Pouching her lips in dissatisfaction, Joyce was about to turn to chat with Cherie who sat next to her when the auctioneer continued, "This was a gift from a filial son to his mother, and today it's here for a meaningful cause in her honor."
Another wave of grasp and commotion followed. Many young women who were initially keen to auction for this pair of earrings now changed their minds, thinking that the earrings suddenly appeared to be too old for their age.
Cherie looked disgusted upon hearing that elaboration. "I'm not going to wear those grandma earrings," she scoffed and said arrogantly to Joyce. Hearing that, Joyce's interest in that pair of earrings also subsided.
"The starting bid for this beautiful pair is RM5,000," the auctioneer announced.
Kaylee, seated a few rows back, had her eyes sparkled gazing at the sight of the tiny earrings from afar. She had always admired the elegance of jade, and these earrings were exceptionally beautiful. She hadn't planned on bidding on anything tonight, but meeting this pair of earrings was divinely fated. Something about these earrings spoke to her, and now knowing their name and the story behind them, they intrigued her even more. Without knowing their previous owner, she felt a deep connection to them, as if they were meant to be hers.
Before she could raise her paddle, a voice called out from across the room. "Five thousand five," the 33-year-old Noel Deon announced confidently. Known for his sharp business acumen, Noel thought meaningful earrings would make a perfect gift for his mother. Mainly, perhaps to temporarily dissuade her from constantly pushing him toward blind dates and marriage.
Kaylee hesitated for a moment, then raised her paddle. "Six thousand," she called out, her heart racing. She had never participated in an auction before, and the thrill of it was exhilarating.
Noel glanced over, surprised to see someone else interested in the earrings. He raised his paddle again. "Six thousand five," he bid, determined to win.
Kaylee bit her lip, feeling a mixture of excitement and anxiety. She did a quick value estimation, and she considered anything below RM8,000 still worthwhile to pursue. Plus, she really loved this pair of earrings already. She raised her paddle once more. "Seven thousand," she said, her voice steady but her hands slightly trembling.
Noel hesitated, looking at the earrings and then back at the woman who raced the bid with him. He admired her determination and realized how much she wanted them. Smiling to himself, he decided to let her have this one. Kaylee held her breath as the auctioneer looked around the room, giving others a chance to bid. Seeing no further interest, he raised his gavel. "Going once, going twice... sold to the lady at the back for RM7,000!"
The crowd applauded as the auctioneer finalized the sale. Kaylee felt a surge of triumph and joy. She had got the earrings! As she stood to finalize the purchase, several people turned to look at her, including Noel.
Noel watched her with interest, impressed by her poise and determination. He had seen her during one of the mega construction projects around town in the past but had never had the chance to speak with her. Now, he felt a curious admiration for this young woman who had captured the attention of many in the room.
On the other side, Victor's sharp eyes never really left Kaylee from the time he had located her during his speech. He watched as she engaged in the bidding for his late mother's earrings, noting the confidence in her posture and the clear, steady tone of her voice. Her eyes shining with determination. There was something about her that drew him in, something beyond her physical beauty. Each time she outbid Noel, Victor's interest deepened. He could see the fire in her eyes, a passion that went beyond mere desire for the earrings.
She's not just bidding for an item; there's something deeper driving her, he thought, feeling a strange connection and pull toward her.
When she finally won the earrings, Victor's heart swelled with joy. He felt an intense desire to know more about her, to understand what made her so captivating. He also felt a strange comfort knowing that his dearest late mother's earrings now belonged to this woman.
Kaylee carefully placed the precious earrings into her bag, her heart still fluttering from the excitement. She couldn't wait to go home, take them out, admire their exquisiteness, wear them, feel the smooth warm jade against her skin, and remember this special night. Kaylee glanced around, feeling a mix of pride and self-consciousness under the scrutiny of so many elite members of the town. She caught Noel's eye and nodded politely. He returned the gesture with a respectful nod, acknowledging her victory.
With the end of the auction and the crowd leaving gradually, the announcement came over the speakers, calling the VIPs to take their seats for the presentation on the architectural design of the renovation project. Kaylee gathered her materials and made her way toward the stage, her heart steady with confidence. Victor, seated front and center, his gaze instinctively glued to her.
So, she is the architect of this renovation project... he thought, without realizing the little smile that creeped at the end of his lips. Hann was now more immuned to such unusual behavior of President Vic. But he was observant. He did notice Victor's gaze for a while, and traced it to the woman on the stage, the same woman he saw in the common lounge area. Boss and her...? he wondered.
Kaylee stood confidently at the front of the room, ready to showcase her innovative design for the church's renovation. She had spent months refining her plans, integrating modern technology with the historical essence of the building.
"Good evening, everyone. I am Kaylee Stone," she began, her voice clear and confident. "Thank you for your generosity tonight. I am honored to present to you the architectural design for the renovation of our beloved St. Thomas Cathedral."
A large screen behind her displayed detailed blueprints and artistic renderings. "This design pays homage to our rich cultural heritage while incorporating modern elements to ensure longevity and functionality. Notice how the arches mirror the traditional Dayak motifs, symbolizing unity and strength."
Kaylee Stone... Victor watched intently while repeating her name in his mind. He was impressed by her eloquence and the meticulous detail in her work. Kaylee continued, her passion for architecture shining through every word. "The use of locally sourced materials not only supports our economy but also ensures that the church remains a true representation of Sarawak's spirit."
She continued, "As we embark on this renovation project, it is crucial to honor the historical significance of our beloved church while incorporating modern advancements to enhance its functionality and sustainability. One of the key elements of my design is the use of Artificial Intelligence, or AI."
She clicked a button on her remote, and a detailed 3D rendering of the church appeared on the screen behind her. The audience leaned forward, intrigued.
"AI can significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of our renovation process," Kaylee continued. "Here are some innovative ways we can utilize this technology:
Firstly, on Structural Integrity Analysis: We will employ AI-powered drones equipped with advanced sensors to perform detailed structural integrity analyses. These drones can access hard-to-reach areas and provide real-time data on the condition of the building's foundation, walls, and roof. This will allow us to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems, ensuring the longevity of the renovation.
Secondly, on Smart Lighting and Energy Management: By integrating AI into our lighting and energy systems, we can create a more sustainable and cost-effective environment. AI can analyze usage patterns and natural light availability to optimize energy consumption, reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally, smart lighting can adjust brightness and color temperature based on the time of day and the specific activities taking place in the church, enhancing the overall ambiance."
"This architect looks really young. Sounds like a smart one, her AI innovations sound cool, too!" said Joyce as she lightly knocked on Cherie's shoulder with her own, admiring Kaylee's confidence and eloquence. Cherie wasn't really listening to Kaylee. She was busy coordinating some plans over her smart phone, texting one of the event volunteers.
Just a few minutes ago, she heard about a pairing activity, an interactive VR experience that was coming up next. With some insider information, she managed to contact one of the volunteers and was now instructing him to manipulate the pairing list via text messages, ensuring that she would be partnered with Victor. Her heart raced with anticipation; this was her chance to create an intimate moment, one that would make Victor see her in a new light!
You surprise me again, Kaylee Stone. Noel, who was among the VIPs, also found Kaylee more and more captivating. Who are you, really? he asked in his heart. For a moment, he was thinking how glad he would be if his mother could arrange a date for him with Kaylee, a thought he would be shocked to catch himself lingering on.
"Thirdly, using AI-driven 3D scanning technology, we can create precise digital replicas of the church's intricate architectural details. This will allow us to preserve these elements while making necessary repairs or enhancements. The AI can also suggest restoration techniques that are historically accurate and minimally invasive, maintaining the church's authentic appearance," Kaylee continued.
"Predictive Maintenance is another area AI can benefit us in this renovation effort. AI algorithms can monitor the building's systems and predict when maintenance is required. By analyzing data from sensors placed throughout the church, AI can detect early signs of wear and tear, allowing us to schedule repairs proactively. This will prevent unexpected failures and extend the lifespan of our renovation efforts.
Finally, on Virtual Reality Tours: We will create an AI-powered virtual reality experience that allows parishioners and visitors to explore the church's history and the renovation process interactively. This VR tour will highlight key historical events, architectural features, and the various stages of the renovation. It will also serve as an educational tool, fostering a deeper appreciation for the church's heritage."
Kaylee paused, allowing the audience to absorb and process her ideas. She could see the interest and curiosity in their eyes, and she felt a surge of confidence.
"By leveraging these AI technologies," she concluded, "we can ensure that our renovation project not only preserves the historical essence of the church but also creates a modern, sustainable, and engaging environment for our community. Thank you."
The room erupted in applause, and Kaylee felt a warm sense of accomplishment. As the audience began to ask questions, Victor raised his hand and Kaylee acknowledged him with a nod, her heart racing slightly, recalling his name in her heart: President Victor Langford...
"Miss Stone," he said, his deep voice calm and authoritative, yet carrying a blend of admiration and curiosity, "your use of AI in this renovation and your overall design are truly innovative and remarkable. I'm particularly interested in how you plan to integrate modern sustainability practices with historical elements. Could you elaborate on that?"
Kaylee smiled, appreciating the intelligent question. "Of course, President Victor. We have incorporated solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems discreetly within the design. These elements ensure that while the church maintains its historical integrity, it also embraces the future of sustainable living."
The cold President Victor smiled and nodded, clearly impressed. "That's an excellent approach. Balancing tradition and innovation are no small feat. Thank you, Miss Stone. Your vision for this project is inspiring and commendable."
Kaylee felt a rush of pride and gratitude. "Thank you, President Victor. It is an honor to contribute to such a meaningful project."
His heart moved by the charismatic smile on Kaylee's face, Victor couldn't stop the rising edges of his lips. By now, Hann was fully sure that something was going on between his dearest President Vic and that architect Kaylee Stone tonight. He had got to watch them more closely to find out what was going on.
Their Q&A exchange left a lasting impression on both of them.

Cherie's most awaited agenda was finally here.
This Virtual Reality or VR experience session was a specially prepared teaser to deliver a taste of the power of AI integrated with VR, designed to simulate the renovation process of the church, allowing participants to walk through the virtual space and interact with elements of the design. The VIPs were divided into pairs, each pair consisted of one person wearing the VR headset and walking up a set of mini stairs, while the other guided them verbally.
Cherie had what she wanted. She was successfully paired with Victor. She rushed to the platform, grabbing the VR headset and slipping it on before Victor could react. "Looks like I'm up first!" she said with a playful laugh, her voice muffled slightly by the headset. Victor smiled politely, though his eyes flickered toward another platform where Kaylee Stone was preparing for her own VR experience. His heart skipped a beat at the sight of her, being so close to him. The platforms for each pair were arranged back-to-back, row by row, and Kaylee's back was right behind Cherie's.
As Victor began to guide Cherie, he divided his attention, still glancing at Kaylee every chance he got. Cherie, noticing his distraction, decided to take action. She pretended to fumble when she got on the first step of the mini stairs, making a show of losing her balance. "Oh no!" she exclaimed, hoping that Victor would rush to catch her.
But her plan went awry. Instead of falling to the side, Cherie stumbled backward, knocking into Kaylee, who was experiencing the VR simulation just behind her. Kaylee, unaware of the real-world chaos due to the immersive VR headset, lost her balance and began to fall from the mini stairs.
Victor's attention snapped back to the platform just in time to see Kaylee falling off the stairs. Kaylee, still in shock of the sudden knock that came from Cherie, knew that she would have to fall onto the ground. With her VR headset still on, she had no idea what surface she would be falling onto. She could only hope that her face wouldn't hit onto anything sharp. Victor's instincts kicked in, and he leaped forward, reaching out to steady her. His hands found her waist, catching her falling frame firmly but respectfully. The next thing Kaylee knew, she was half-lying on someone's wide chest.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine concern.
President Victor? she thought. The voice was unmistakably familiar, and this was the name that came to her mind upon hearing it. The warmth of his touch lingered on her skin, and she felt an inexplicable sense of safety.
"I'm alright, thank you," she managed to say, her voice slightly breathless from the shock.
Victor helped her straighten her posture, his hands still steadying her. Meanwhile, Cherie pulled off her VR headset, annoyed by the commotion and the attention Victor was giving Kaylee. She saw them standing close together, Victor's hands still on Kaylee's waist, and her eyes narrowed with jealousy.
Victor, realizing the intimacy of the moment and feeling his heart race, quickly stepped back after being sure that Kaylee had had her firm footing. "Hann," he called out to his personal assistant, "can you take over for me and guide this lady here through the VR experience?" he said, pointing at Cherie.
Hann nodded and stepped in, while Cherie seethed silently, watching as Victor walked away. Kaylee, still in a bit of a daze, removed her VR headset. She took a short while to regain her sense of direction, but by then Victor was already across the room, leaning against a pillar as he took a deep breath.
Victor's mind was racing. The feel of Kaylee in his arms, her strong grasp of his arms out of fear when he caught her from falling - it had been overwhelming. He couldn't understand why his heartbeat increased intensely, something so foreign to him.
Cherie watched Victor from a distance, her mind spinning with frustration and renewed determination. She had hoped to create a memorable moment with him, but instead, she had given that architect the perfect opportunity to capture his attention. This wasn't over, Cherie vowed silently. She would find another way to get close to Victor, to make him see that she was the one for him.
But for now, she had to bear with the fact that her scheme had backfired, and it had only brought Persistent Victor and that architect closer together. She clenched her fists, her mind already working on her next move, even as she forced a smile and participated in the rest of the VR experience with Hann's guidance.
Kaylee, now seated on a bench outside the main hall, replayed the moment in her mind. She could still feel the warmth of Persistent Victor's touch, and her heart fluttered at the thought of his strong arms that gave her so much sense of security. She had felt an undeniable connection in that brief moment of contact, a spark that she couldn't ignore.
As she sat there, she couldn't help but wonder: Was it really President Victor Langford who saved me just now? Why did he rush to leave immediately? Would I ever meet him again?
